Managing Storage
Often computers passed between many employees may have lots of files on them that are no longer used but are
taking up lots of space, WizTree is a useful piece of software that can be used to help find and remove unwanted data.
WizTree is a free and open source disk usage statistics viewer and cleanup tool.
How to use WizTree
Below I will outline how to use WizTree:
1. Press the download button above, and download the executable file.
2. Open the executable file.
3. Follow through the installation process.
4. Once installation has finished, WizTree should open. Click on the box next to Select: and select the drive/drives from the list you wish to manage.
5. Press the box that says Scan, you will now have to wait normally no more than 30 seconds while WizTree calculates each individual files storage size. (Green bar under the Select box shall indicate when complete)
6. Once completed the files will be organised into a hierarchical order, this means largest files at the top and smallest at the bottom for the folders and sub folders. Making it easy find what files are using up lots of storage. WizTree will present a visualization of each folder:
7. Now to find files that are using lots of storage, you will just have to look through the file structure top down, often old users that are no longer working there or use that computer may have things such as emails downloaded onto that machine that could be using lots of storage. However, try and make sure anything you remove is not of any importance.
